Mary Ellen is author of three books, the most recent Effective Philanthropy: Organizational Success through Deep Diversity and Gender Equality (MIT Press, 2006), winner of the 2007 Independent Sector/ARNOVA Virginia Hodgkinson Research Prize for the “Best Book on Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Sector that Informs Policy and Practice.” A nationally-recognized researcher, consultant, and keynote speaker, she is Principal of Capek Consulting and served as a founding officer of the National Council for Research on Women, a coalition of more than 120 US-based research, policy, and advocacy centers. During her 15 years with NCRW, she launched many of their groundbreaking publications: Women’s Research Network News, Issues Quarterly (IQ), and IQFax as well as several published series of organizational directories and research reports. An advocate for using technology and design to improve access to research and information resources, Capek coordinated a five-year national coalition of librarians, researchers, creative writers, public policy specialists, and activists to produce and edit the award-winning A Women’s Thesaurus (Harper & Row, 1987), a project and publication that transformed how information about women and girls is disseminated—within Library of Congress Subject Headings, academic and legal information systems and databases as well as international media use and everyday language.
